Savannah Mortimer

My primary creative mediums are design and photography. I take a lot of inspiration from the beach and ocean, as well as other parts of my Magnetic Island home. As a result, my style is very relaxed and organic, showcasing bright bursts of colour every now and then.

My biggest motivation for creating is that I feel genuine joy and happiness when I do. I love the relief and calm I feel when I partake in something creative. It is how I deal with stress, and the idea that I am working my brain and creativity gives me great personal satisfaction.

I also feel motivated when I see the joy and admiration that other people have for the work I create. This boosts my confidence and makes me feel proud that I can create something that appeals to others rather than just myself. These moments thwart any self-doubt I have about my work not being good enough, and further encourage me to continue in the arts field and keep creating work the way I want to.

I aim for people to look at my work and understand my style and feel the passion behind it, while interpreting it their own way. I know that some people may not like my style, but there will always be the ones who do. When it comes down to it, I create because I want to create. It is what makes me happy and makes me feel I am achieving something great. Upon graduating, I hope to do a bit of freelance work around Townsville and Magnetic Island, then spend some time travelling and working to build new skills which I can hopefully apply to a design company, and work either in design or photography. Whichever door opens for me, so long as it’s creative I will be happy. It’s just like Elton John said, “I have only been interested in the creative side of life.”
